Although Spring Equinox, officially marking the beginning of Spring was yesterday March 20, it still doesn’t feel much like Spring to me!
Although I cannot do anything about the weather, I can do something about the way I am feeling. If I can change my attitude, the weather won’t matter as much. Certainly it has been an unusually cold and long winter for this part of the year. Even the poor spring bulbs have been confused. Some of them came up earlier, only to be greeted shortly afterward by snow and cold and rain. On my latest walk I noticed that more spring flowers are trying again and this time, even though the weather isn’t that warm I am hopeful they will make it.
Spring Cleaning is a great way to get rid of clutter built up over the colder months, while making room for the new. This is true both literally and figuratively, so whether you are cleaning and clearing your home, or clearing yourself energetically or both, essential oils can play an important part.
In their book Daily Aromatherapy, Transforming the Seasons of Your Life with Essential Oils Joni Keim and Ruah Bull share a special Aromatic Ceremony to honor Spring:
In a small glass container, mix together:
1 drop Lemongrass to clear and cleanse
4 drops mandarin for optimism
3 drops Bergamot for hope
3 drops Coriander for creativity
1 drop Nutmeg for new beginnings
Gather together four small planting pots and enough soil to fill them.
Choose four seeds or seedlings of plants you would enjoy growing this season.
Sit quietly. Close your eyes. Take three slow, relaxed, deep breaths.
Open your eyes. Put a drop of your blend on a tissue and inhale the aroma through your nose.
Pause and inhale again.
Open your eyes and determine four intentions for this Spring:
1) Identify a new perspective you want to embrace
2) Name a feeling you would like to experience
3) Think of a healthy habit you want to form
4) Discover something that would enhance your spirituality
Now choose a seed/seedling to plant in the first pot, and as you do, say your first intention out loud.
Choose another to plant for your second intentions, and so on.
Water them, knowing that you are nurturing your intentions.
Place the pots in a sunny, warm place, aware that you are bringing to these plants, and to yourself,
all that is needed to “grow” these intentions this Spring.
Every time you tend to these plants and watch them grow,
be aware of how these new patterns are flourishing in your body, mind, heart, and spirit.
Inhale your blend once more and know that you are fully supported in what you are ‘planting’ for yourself this Spring.
