Healthy hair is generally slightly oily and strong. It is constantly replacing itself and is generally easy to comb. Your hair, just as your skin, will often reflect both your diet and your lifestyle. Hormonal changes as well as psychological stresses can also be reflected in the condition of our hair.
Our hair can be just as sensitive as our skins and the structure and fullness of each hair will depend on its natural coloring. For instance blond hair is fine, while dark hair is more coarse. The hair grows out of the scalp, while the skin contains the hair root, the erector pili muscle, the sebaceous gland, the blood vessel and the hair shaft. The erector pili muscle determines the direction in which the hair will lie. The sebaceous gland provides sebum to coat the hair, giving it suppleness and strength, as well as protecting it from ultraviolet radiation, dirt and unfavourable atmospheric conditions. Every time hair moves sebum is brought to the surface. Hair is made up of keratin cells, which consist almost exclusively of protein, so it is important to have a healthy supply of protein in the diet.
Your hair is naturally acidic and frequent washing with an alkaline shampoo can disrupt this acid balance. It is best to use a mild pH balanced shampoo and then after washing use an acidic rinse to help restore hair’s natural acidic balance. Essential oils can easily be added to your shampoo for added effect. You would add up to 20 drops of essential oil to every 500ml of shampoo. The essential oils chosen will depend on your hair type and any hair problem. See listing below. Essential oils can also be added to your acidic hair rinse. Add 1 drop of essential oil or essential oil blend to 1 teaspoon of cider vinegar or lemon then add to one cup of boiled water.
For Normal Hair consider adding cedarwood, Roman chamomile, clary sage, cypress, geranium, lavender, mandarin, neroli, petitgrain and rose. Roman chamomile and lemon can be used to enhance the color of light hair, while rosemary can be used to enhance the color of dark hair.
For Dry Hair consider adding Roman chamomile, frankincense, geranium, juniper, lavender, rose, sandalwood and ylang ylang.
For Oily Hair consider adding clary sage, cedarwood, cypress, frankincense, grapefruit, juniper, lavender, lemon, patchouli, rosemary and tea tree.
For Dandruff consider adding cedarwood, cypress, eucalyptus, lavender, patchouli, rosemary or tea tree if the hair is oily or Roman chamomile, geranium or lavender if the hair is normal or dry.
For Hair Loss consider adding cajeput, cedarwood, clary sage, lavender, patchouli, peppermint or rosemary.
