Aromatic Hand Sanitizer
When the ‘cold and flu season’ arrives, it is up to us to find as many strategies as possible to keep ourselves healthy and free from germs. Making an Aromatic Hand Sanitizer is just one of those tools. They are easy and simple to make and can be customized with just the right blend to suit your needs and aroma preferences.
They don’t cost a lot to make and could also make a nice stocking stuffer.
So what do you need:
- A small bottle. With or without a pump or spray top. You can often find these small plastic bottles at your local dollar store, or in the section of the grocery store that sells travel size toiletries.
- A gel base. I generally just use a glycerin gel base that I have bought in bulk from my essential oil supplier, however you could also use a combination of Aloe Vera gel and water [1 Tablespoon Aloe Vera gel to ever 3 oz (90 ml) water]; or Aloe Vera gel and witch hazel [3 Tablespoons Aloe Vera gel to 2 Tablespoons witch hazel]; or Aloe Vera gel and alcohol [3 Tablespoons Aloe Vera gel to 1 Tablespoon alcohol].
- Essential Oils of your choice added at a 1% or less dilution. Essential oils with good antiviral, antiseptic, anti-fungal properties include among others: cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, orange, oregano, palmarosa, pine, rosemary, spruce, tea tree and thyme. I like to use my germ-busting blend which is great as a kitchen surface cleaner and in a hand sanitizer.
- Add a solubolizer to the essential oils before adding them to the gel, which is a water based product. If you don’t have a solubolizer you can add liquid soap to your essential oil drops in a 1:1 ratio.
Germ Busting Blend
8 drops Lavender
10 drops Lemon
5 drops Eucalyptus globulus
3 drops Geranium
3 drops Palmarosa
If you are only making one bottle fill it with your gel base and then add your essential oils to the mix. Shake well and use.
If you decide you want to make up a larger batch, I find it is easier to mix the whole recipe up together in a bowl and then fill up the individual bottles.
Create a unique label and you have a gift that someone will really enjoy.
