Angelica (Angelica archangelica) belongs to the Umbeliferae family. It is a tall (grows up to 6 ft in height) plant with rhizome-like roots, ferny leaves and umbels of white flowers. The whole plant is strongly aromatic. It is native to temperate and subartic regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
Angelica has long been valued as a fragrance component in soaps, lotions and perfumes. It has been used extensively as a flavouring agent in many food categories, as well as in alcoholic and soft drinks. Its skin soothing properties have been long appreciated. The yellow juice from the roots was an ingredient of ‘Carmelite water’, a remedy used to promote long life and to protect against spells and poisons.
Psychologically, it can be helpful for mental and nervous fatigue and nervous depression.
On the physiological level it can be used for dull and congested and/or irritated skin; bronchitis, colds and coughs; flatulence and indigestion.
On a subtle level, Angelica is often associated with angels and can be helpful in helping one to connect to the angelic realm.
Contraindications: Avoid during pregnancy. If using topically be aware that Angelica Root is phototoxic and that this oil may cause skin irritation or sensitization.
